Midweek Movie Mouth-off: good actors, bad choices

Not every movie that an actor or actress takes on can be an Oscar-worthy performance. Sometimes, they might take on a role just to get a pay-check. Sometimes they haven’t been in anything for a while, and need the visibility. Sometimes it’s even a vanity projects that someone should have convinced them to put down. But sometimes, good Hollywood stars make such consistently bad choices, you’ve got to wonder what is going on.

I’ll get the obvious one out the way for you: Nicholas Cage. If you’ve seen movies like Face/Off, Matchstick Men, Kick-Ass and Lord of War, you’ll know he’s a solid actor. Heck, I even liked him in Snake Eyes and National Treasure (but only the first one). But, Like Darryn pointed out in last week’s Top List Thursday, Cage is seemingly content to pop up in any movie these days. Between random crap like The Wicker Man, Season of the Witch, Left Behind and (shudder) the Ghost Rider movies, Cage looks like he’s seriously fallen on some hard times.

Who do you think needs to fire their agent and stop making awful movie choices?

Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins & Jeff Bridges appear in all kinds of crap these days.

Oh man, especially Pacino. 🙁 One of my fave actors back in the day… Now, sadly, mostly seen appearing in random nonsense (just look at his cameo / role as himself in “Jack & Jill”… Wow… Just wow…).

That’s a trend I won’t mind seeing die a fiery death: actors playing themselves. We get it, you’re cool & ironic.

Morgan Freeman has only shown up in one movie for the sake of being there and that was deep blue sea years ago. The rest of the movies he plays his part exceptionally well even if the movie is horrible.

That was kinda the point – good actor, bad choice – like him being in Lucy, I can’t stand that movie, he was still good though.

I don’t know if you’ve seen The Equaliser with Denzel Washington? He was awesome in that, and literally the only reason the movie was okay overall. A lesser actor & the movie would’ve been terrible.

Wait what? You disliked Lucy? I found it a fun scifi action romp.

I actually also dug it. Yes, the “science” is dumb, but it’s the most creative thing Luc Besson has done since Fifth Element.

Thought it started out well, but found it becoming more & more illogical as the movie went along. Way too many times I was sitting there thinking “but why?” or “what, what?” – and that was before I started drinking. O_o

          Spoiler

He gets off a chopper then immediately gets eaten by a shark.
Total screen time … about 2 minutes.

Is this a reference to the talk show host who called Samuel L Jackson “Morgan Freeman” during an interview (that went totally over my head)?

Bruce Willis – One of my favourites, but sometimes he shows up in the most dead average (sometimes bad – Good Day to die hard) movies.

Willis has been in “pay the bills” mode for the last few years now. Just look at his recent filmography. So much trash.

I wanna say Ryan Reynolds but since he apparently decided to go get the damn movie he wanted to play in funded all by himself I gotta give him props.

Reynolds is a weird case – he goes for what look like solid movies, which turn out to be terrible flops. Just bad luck.
