The Leftovers head

It’s been nine months since we last told you anything about The Leftovers, HBO’s unrelentingly bleak mystery-drama about people trying to make sense of their world after two percent of the worlds’ population disappeared. In that time Darryn hasn’t stopped trying to convince everyone his parents are dead so he can wear his Batman costume full time, Nick got pregnant and had a baby, and we’ve discovered Kervyn is my father.

Yes, it’s been a terrible time for everyone but never fear – with The Leftovers season two set to premiere on 4 October everything’s about to get much worse, in comparison, as this new trailer will show you:

They look so hopeful about getting a new beginning – if only they knew what we do… there is no hope for them.

As we’ve said before, and can be seen in the trailer, season two is changing locations and introducing new characters as season one essentially covered the novel of the same name on which the show’s based; so show runners Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Tom Perrotta (the original author) have had to break new ground for the upcoming season – and it looks interesting.

The Leftovers is one of those shows that you really have to be in the right mood to watch as it’s slow, heavy going – but at the same time rather compelling and thought-provoking in its exploration of human behaviour. I’m on board for season two, how about you?

The Leftovers poster

The ten-episode second season of The Leftovers will begin airing on HBO on 4 October, and stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Christoper Eccleston (it’s me, Eckles!), Carrie Coon and Liv Tyler. We can always do with more Liv Tyler. Joining the existing cast will be Kevin Carroll, Regina King, Jovan Adepo and Annie Q, among others.
