TheKnick

One of the best shows on TV in recent years is without a doubt the totally insane and brilliant The Knick. Clive Owen plays John Thackery, a doctor obsessed with being the best. Obsessed with pioneering surgery and obsessed with narcotics in a way that makes Gregory House look like a Mormon.

Directed by Steven Soderburgh and broadcast through Cinemax the series is set in the 1900’s as medicine and its application are jumping leaps and bounds, usually through the experimentation on helpless lab-rat patients. It investigates racism, sexism, and corruption within the medical system that would make most NHS patients shut the hell up. Here’s a little more on the show before the trailer. Enjoy!

As upscale care in New York shifts from urban locales in the early 1900s, Knickerbocker Hospital remains in the city to serve a mostly poor, immigrant population. Undeterred by high mortality from sepsis in a pre-antibiotics era, chief surgeon John Thackery pushes medicine’s boundaries, pioneering procedures despite his painful past and severe cocaine addiction. Dr. Algernon Edwards, recruited by hospital patron Capt. August Robertson, is the chief’s professional equal, but Edwards’ color skews Thackery’s opinion – until a chance discovery changes it. Co-executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, who directs the first season, The Knick is a sometimes-graphic drama, revealing racism and corruption while desperate people became operating-room guinea pigs.

It saddens me that the show hasn’t taken off like House MD did. It certainly offers more in way of character exposition and the directing (the first season was all directed by Soderburgh himself) is brilliant. It also breaks the very formulaic doctor saves patients show because he really couldn’t give a stuff about them. It is certainly not a show for the squeamish. You won’t have Owen’s character blaming everything on lupus – instead you’ll have him slicing patients open like he’s auditioning for the next Saw movie, only more tastefully done, I promise!

Acting alongside the drugged-up doctor in season 2 is Andre Holland, Jeremy Bobb, Juliet Rylance and Eve Hewson and will come to theaters 16 October.
