I’m a proud South African who firmly believes that our country can compete on the international stage. But sadly, not in everything though. For instance, many local movie productions seem to still have a lot to learn when it comes to cutting effective movie trailers. And apparently they need to learn it from… a local movie production!

Sink is an upcoming drama that already made a big splash when it picked up several accolades at the Silwerskerm Festival in August. It walked home with five awards in the feature film category – Best actress, Best original score, Best script, Best editing, and Best cinematography – and based on this incredible first trailer for the film I can totally see why!

‘Sink’ tells the story of Rachel, a Mozambican domestic worker living in Johannesburg, who is forced to make a life-changing decision after her daughter dies while under the care of her employers, Michelle & Chris Jordaan. She can either return to poverty-stricken Mozambique or continue working for the people responsible for the death of her child so that she can keep her home, her visa and continue to support her family.

Things become even more complicated when she finds out that her employers are expecting their first child and Sink explores how three people come to terms with loss, grief and forgiveness.

Damn! Now that’s how you cut a trailer! Dramatically intense but not just giving a recap of the entire film as so many local films are wont to do in their marketing. If the rest of the film possesses any of that technical ability – and it reportedly does – then this will definitely be one to watch out for next year.

Sink is based on the bestselling novel ‘Rachel Weeping’ Brett Michael Innes, who also adapted the screenplay and directs, and stars Shoki Mokgapa, Anel Alexander and Jacques Bessenger. It is scheduled for release on 18 March, 2016.
