Things are finally looking up for the weekend box office in the US of A. After a month or two of underwhelming numbers on all but a select few movies, people are once again flocking to cinemas. This week’s number one debut came from The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, with a modest take of $30.3 million. While not as high as the first film which made over $32 million opening, it’s still a solid start as worldwide sales combined with domestic results has resulted in the flick making over $108.3 million so far.

Black Mass also did well, earning a second place finish with $23.3 million, as the Depp-parted film earned rave reviews for Johnny Depp’s performance. The big news however comes from Universal, as 2015 continues to shape up to be their best year ever.

Everest opened up to big numbers in IMAX theaters, earning an average of $13 867 per screen over the weeken. With the film showing on 545 oversized screens, that came to a not too shabby total of $7.5 million for the large-scale format. Here’s a look at how everyone else did over the US weekend.

  1. Not many original titles there, sadly.
    Clearly action still sells well.
