Here's your first look at SUPERGIRL's Red Tornado

While watching The Flash, there probably wasn’t a week that went by where I was not gobsmacked with the incredibly high level of visual effects and costume design that they were regularly producing on a TV show budget. Some of the stuff they did really rivaled the type of work you would see in a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. But I guess not all superhero TV shows can pull off that feat though.

While what we’ve seen of CBS’ upcoming Supergirl TV series – which is produced by many of the same folks who gave us The Flash – has looked pretty good from a technical standpoint, this latest reveal will probably leave your face red. That’s from slapping your palm onto it several times, in case you were wondering.

The reason for the facepalm is this first pic of the supervillain android Red Tornado that the network released (via EW) over the past weekend. And it looks like kinda sucky.

Yeesh! It’s like somebody made one of those Sweded homemade trailers for Avengers: Age of Ultron and this is their $20 version of Paul Bettany’s Vision. I mean that looks like it would be totally at home on the set of a new Power Rangers TV show. I’m hoping that this is once again just another case of “it will look better in motion” because right now that is not working for me.

And if you’re not familiar with the classic DC Comics character, in his comic book origin he is actually the amalgamation of two separate entities: a highly advanced android body designed by Dr. T.O. Morrow to send against the Justice Society of America, who gets inhabited and “brought to life” by a wind elemental spirit. The combination gives him enhanced intelligence, strength, an incredibly durable body and the ability to generate cyclone-force winds that he utilizes for flight, combat and other uses.

For Supergirl, Salem actor Iddo Goldberg will play T.O. Morrow as well as the android he creates in his own likeness. The official character description gives no mention of air elemental powers though, merely describing Red Tornado as “the most advanced android the world has ever seen. Designed by scientist T.O. Morrow for the U.S. Army as the ultimate superweapon, he soon becomes sentient, posing a grave danger to National City — including the people Supergirl cares about most.”

Supergirl stars Melisa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) as Superman’s eponymous superheroine cousin, while the support cast is rounded out by Callista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott. It is scheduled to debut on October 26.

  1. I like the head shot, the body looks crappy though – but I’ll rather see it in the show. The effects in the pilot weren’t half bad.

It wasn’t bad, I quite liked it. It reminded me a lot of The Flash pilot in that it had it’s good stuff & it’s bad stuff – the potential is definitely there.

She was awesome, rest of the cast were a bit hit & miss, special effects were pretty good, some of the story was a bit flimsy. It’s definitely skewed towards a female audience, so if someone can’t handle that they won’t like it.

Watched it on Monday, really enjoyed it.

Also watched the pilots for Lucifer, Blindspot & Minority Report.

Lucifer looks a lot of fun – mostly because he’s freaking awesome, but I’m guessing comics fans won’t be too happy.

Blindspot looked okay – just a basic procedural though really, might go somewhere, might not.

Minority Report… has really impressive special effects and nothing else – if it was going for style over substance it nailed it.

Yeah. Heard mixed reports on Minority report (hue hue!) Lucifer is awesome and haven’t even heard of Blindspot.

He is in the comics, yes. Iirc, even there he was initially created for villainous purposes.

I only watched up to ep 9 of Flash, thought it was Smallville 2.0 crap and this doesn’t look like it’s any better.

I will still watch it though…. for the simple sad, shallow reason of Melissa Benoist being cute as FUARK.
