Pacific Rim (12)

Last week, a chorus of grumbles loud enough to burst some Kaiju eardrums were heard around the world as news broke that a sequel to 2013’s fan-favourite mech vs monsters movie Pacific Rim was getting delayed indefinitely as a result of some schedule reshuffling by Universal to accommodate their new shared universe plans for a Godzilla vs King Kong throwdown. Darryn was so sad that he nearly put on a Nickleback album to console himself. Nearly. Nobody is ever that sad.

But it would seem that despite the widespread report of the demise of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, as it’s unofficially known, people forgot to speak to one important man about all of this: Writer/director Guillermo Del Toro. EW finally did and what the director told them doesn’t quite line up with the image of complete gloom and doom we’d been hearing.

“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”

Del Toro did admit though that there will be a delay to the production due to Universal’s movie monster plans, but that the “indefinite” part is not exactly accurate.

“It moved further. I may do another movie in the middle.”

This would of course not be the Mexican director’s first rodeo when it comes to his big budget productions being delayed, reshuffled or just outright scrapped due to outside forces though, but Del Toro can still joke about it.

I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness. [Laughs] And I would quickly become a millionaire.”

And in case you were wondering on who Del Toro thinks would win between Godzilla and King Kong – the monsters that just partially derailed his own monster movie – he’s not picking sides.

“Even when I was a 10-year-old geek, I never engaged in those things. I would like them both to win, and come over to my house for dinner.”

Somehow I don’t think a 60-ft lizard with the world’s worst case of halitosis would make a good dinner guest. Silly Guillermo.
