Midweek Movie Mouth-off: oddly specific typecasting

Thanks to looks, personality or general demeanour, actors can very easily be typecast in certain roles. Owen Wilson makes the perfect beach bum, Michael Cera is always the awkward indie teen and Christopher Lee can’t be anything but a crazy supervillain.

But what about when movies get weirdly specific with their typecasting? Sean Bean is notorious for (almost) always dying – Goldeneye, The Island, Lord of The Rings and Game of Thrones being the most obvious examples, although let’s not forget about Equilibrium, Outlaw and Henry VIII. Or what about the fact that Tom Cruise almost always has a motorcycle handy and knows how to ride it regardless of his character’s background – Mission Impossible, Top Gun, Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow all have a motorbike riding scene for Cruise. If you want to get even more specific, how about Rachel McAdams as the love interest for time travellers, as seen in Midnight in Paris, About Time and  The Time Traveller’s Wife (obviously).

The list could go on, but I’ll hand it over to you. What other strangely particular typecasting trends have you picked up with Hollywood stars?

Its not very specific but Michael Ironside has made a career out of playing the Military man (pretty awesomely tbh).

Brian Cox also does the military man often but he actually managed to play the same character in 2 different movie franchises (X-Men and The Bourne Series) where in both he was the leader of a top secret project aimed at creating the perfect soldier.

John Goodman seems to get typecast somewhat in animated stuff as a large guy – Santa, Sully, Baloo, the Texan oil baron from “The Princess and the Frog”. Strangely enough, as a sub-category to this, he’s played the fat carnivore who works in show business twice – Rex from “We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story” and Larry from “Father of the Pride”. Go figure.
