Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote may be shelved again. This is not related to the huge accidental obituary mishap from a few weeks ago but due to his lead actor John Hurt (Don Quixote) battling with pancreatic cancer.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has been a passion project that Gilliam has been working on since the late ’90s. However some flooding, a little finance problems, Spanish fighter jets and now the ill health of his lead has caused the project to fall back into the black hole of development hell where it has been for nearly twenty years now.
Hurt has said that his cancer treatment is “going terrifically well” and he is optimistic, but according to The Times there is no insurance company in the world that would cover a 75 year old man with pancreatic cancer. Hurt has said that Gilliam is optimistic about starting the film soon but that might be a stretch considering the frustration of having decades of work going into a project that might end up getting delayed again.
Previous attempts has had the likes of Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor and Robert Duvall attached with even Colin Farrell turning down the part of Sancho Panza.
