I really think there is a place for cliches in movies, with some using them as a kind of wink to the audience. Like The Expendables for instance (we don’t talk about the third installment that went full PG-13). There are also movies like Jurassic World that are more cheese than Trevor’s socks after a grueling walk to the local candy store, but they still work. Then there is this new trailer from debut director Stephen S. Campanelli. It uses cliches like Charlie Sheen does ladies of the night and white substances but is far less enjoyable to watch. I suppose we can’t be to hard on Campanelli, this is his first gig. Before this he spent his time as a camera operator for Clint Eastwood’s crew before heading to our beautiful South Africa to film Momentum. Still, starting a trailer with the sound BVVVVVVVVVV is not a good start and is something even a rookie would know to avoid if they want to be taken seriously. Have a watch and see what you think.

Alex, a mysterious thief, is pulled in by her former partner for one last heist. She quickly finds it was never just about the diamonds. A brutal murder sparks a cat and mouse chase between Alex and a master assassin. Now she must uncover the lies behind the heist and discover the secrets behind the men who have made her a target.

Um. Were those Ant-Man masks? I wonder how the helmet slipped off the rather beautiful Olga Kurylenko’s head so easily, a feat that produces a hair flash that looks like it was pulled straight from a Revlon advert. You will also see the contractually obligatory, and completely unnecessary, behind shot of Olga, because hot MODEL!

It looks like a standard spy ‘thriller’ with an evil protagonist, played by James Purefoy (John Carter), who is obsessed with finding his USB drive. How do I know this? Well that’s all he seems to shout in this trailer. He does make some snarky remarks though on how great Olga’s Alex Farraday is and how she is the world’s best CIA agent. A CIA agent who loses her helmet during a heist thus leading to an international manhunt by deadly assassins. Umm… Okay.

Interestingly the movie also has Morgan Freeman in. Apparently the veteran actor agreed to do any movie Campanelli was going to debut direct, which explains why he isn’t even seen in the trailer (standards people!)

Expect this Oscar contender to limp its way to theaters on 16 October.

  1. This looks like a movie perfect for drinking games, if you don’t value your liver.
