Well here’s one for the books: Hotel Transylvania 2 didn’t just set a September box office record. It also made history as being the only movie of 2015 that starred Adam Sandler and wasn’t crap. Amazing!

Taking an easy first place, Hotel Transylvania 2 set a new September opening record with $47.5 million in US ticket sales. That’s $5 million better than its predecessor and a good sign towards the future of this delightful franchise.

Coming in second place, The Intern pulled in a respectable $18.2 million, which is the second best opening for a Nancy Meyers film out of her last four, topped only by 2009’s It’s Complicated ($22.1m).

Meanwhile, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno was off to a shaky start, banking only $3.9 million and just missing the $4-5 million profit range that distributor BH Tilt was aiming for. Poor word of mouth isn’t helping either, as Roth’s latest horror flick may not have staying power in the long run.

Here’s a look at how everyone else did on the weekend at the US box office:

  • Hotel Transylvania – $47.5 Million
  • The Intern – $18.2 Million
  • Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $14 Million
  • Everest – $13 Million
  • Black Mass – $11.5 Million
  • The Visit – $6.7 Million
  • The Perfect Guy – $4.7 Million
  • War Room – $4.2 Million
  • The Green Inferno – $3.9 Million
  • Sicario – $1.7 Million

Top ten departures this week include Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Straight Outta Compton. A huge hit, Straight Outta Compton has rolled in over $190 million so far in global ticket sales, making the $28 million budgeted film a massively profitable success.

Meanwhile, the latest Mission Impossible has kept Tom Cruise’s dream of voiding life insurance claims alive, raking in over $658.1 million around the world. It may not have reached the heights of success that Ghost Protocol‘s $694.7 million international haul boasts about, but Paramount isn’t complaining.
