Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: movies to travel to

You may not have noticed, but I’ve been absent from TheMovies for the last few weeks, thanks to going overseas on holiday. No, I’m not trying to make you jealous (okay, maybe a little), but while I was away I did start thinking about travel-themed movies.

It’s not a genre (if you can call it that) that I’ve ever been overly interested in, but once I started thinking about it there are a lot of movies that fit the bill. From weird bonding trips that showcase India in The Darjeeling Limited to lonely travellers crossing paths in Tokyo in Lost in Translation, or even paths to self-discovery via Italy and Bali in Eat, Pray, Love, there’s something about travel movies that offers the right mix of inspiration and escapism. Plus, there’s nothing like seeing exotic destinations on screen to make you want to go there!

So what’s your favourite travel movie? And, bonus question: have you been to the country that you fell in love with on screen?

Not really travel movies, but I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled a fair bit overseas, and – true story – every single time I’ve gone on holiday, I went to see another famous landmark/event from a James Bond movie. I’ve been to James Bond island in Thailand (Man WIth the Golden Gun), attended the sound and light show in Giza and visited the Karnak temple in Egypt (The Spy Who Loved Me), drove on the Furka Pass in Switzerland (Goldfinger), ate at the Eiffel Tower restaurant in Paris (A View To A Kill), walked on the canal in Amsterdam (Diamonds Are Forever), visited St Mark’s Square in Venice (Moonraker), etc etc.

Now if only I could get into the space program so that I can scratch that outer space base off my list.
