So Marvel had a big announcement about an upcoming sequel this morning, but anything Marvel does, Fox can do better! Well, not everything. And actually, now that I think about it, not even this one thing… Okay, so I have kind of screwed up this intro, but at least it’s not as much of a headscratcher as Fox announcing a partnership with M&M’s to promote the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, and then releasing a pic showing an M&M version of Magneto and Storm. Yes, really.

Once you’ve stopped laughing at that piece of ridiculousness though, you will see that buried in the press release for the M&M promo (via ComingSoon) is the first official synopsis for the film, and it’s quite a good one!

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

Wait, so Magneto is now working for Apocalypse? Okay, I never saw that coming. Magneto has always been a particularly proud X-Men villain, not bending the knee to anybody, so I would be willing to bet good money that we going to see ol’ Mags eventually turn on his new “master” and help out the X-Men. We also learn something about this movie version of Apocalypse in that he has “amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible”. Does that mean that he is now some kind of leech who takes other mutants’ abilities? Is he basically Sylar from Heroes in some blue face paint and a Liberace costume?

In the comics, he attains his near-omnipotence by using the highly advanced technology of the Celestials, but Marvel holds the rights to those characters (you saw one destroying a world in Guardians of the Galaxy), hence Fox not being able to use them. However he gets his abilities, his goals of world domination don’t appear to have changed, and it certainly sounds like he’s going to be one hell of handful for our heroes.

Director/co-writer Bryan Singer has previously stated that X-Men: Apocalypse is basically the end of a cycle for the X-Men movies and what better way to cap off this chapter than with Magneto and X-Men joining forces to take on an almost impossible foe? (who no longer looks like a Power Rangers bad guy, but like a real badass now, by the way)

Oscar Isaac will of course be playing Apocalypse, while Nicholas Hoult will return as Beast, along with Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Evan Peters as Quicksilver and Lucas Till as Havok. The new film will also introduce some new faces – well some are new young versions of old faces – in Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Ben Hardy as Angel, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Lana Condor as Jubilee.

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled for release on May 27, 2016.
