It would appear that somebody over in Hollywood has some sense after all. After years worth of failed attempts at trying to adapt writer Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s epic post-apocalyptic sci-fi tale Y: The Last Man, the sprawling comic book saga is being developed as a much more appropriate TV series over on FX.

THR reports that Vaughn and Guerra, having regained their work’s film/TV rights from New Line after nothing eventually came of it, will be developing/showrunning the series themselves. Vaughn, one of the most popular and critically acclaimed writers in comics, is of course no stranger to working in the TV realm as he was a long time writer on Lost. He was also initially involved in Under the Dome, but seeing what a catastrophe that show  turned into later before it was cancelled, I think we’ll scratch that one off his record.

For those of you not familiar with it, Y: The Last Man was an award-winning 60 issue series published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint from 2002  to 2008. It told the story of amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, who wake up one morning to find that a mysterious calamity has simultaneously killed off every living creature on Earth with a Y-chromosome except for them. As the only living male animals on Earth, they become both a myth and a prized possession.

During his travels across the country to try and discover why they were spared, Yorick would become embroiled with secret government organizations, modern day amazons, crazy religious cults, hostile armies and more. It was an incredible tale that was not only thrilling, emotional and fun but offered Vaughn the opportunity to dig deep into gender and sociopolitical issues as he explores what a world suddenly robbed of all men would really look like.

Most importantly, it was not the the type of story that could be boiled down into a 90-minute movie without losing a significant amount of what made the story as amazing as it was. DJ Caruso, the last filmmaker attached to the project, actually walked away after New Line wouldn’t follow through with his wish to make it a film trilogy instead of a single feature film.

THR states that Vaughn and Guerra will be joined by The Hunger Games producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, but no directors or cast has been looked at nor are there any timeline set out yet.
