It’s official: The bumps’ gonna goose ya! Coming off the backs of surprising good reviews, the Jack Black-led live-action action adaptation of R.L. Stine’s classic Goosebumps books has opened strongly in the US, with the horror-for-kids adventure flick scaring away most of the competition as it debuted top of the charts with $23.5 million. The comedy adventure fell short of its initial $30+ million estimate, but with 72% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and an A Cinemascore, it will more thank likely have the legs to make a nice big dent in its $58 million production budget.

On the complete opposite end of the genre scale, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ true story Cold War spy drama/thriller Bridge of Spies managed to smuggle $15.3 million out of enemy territory, landing it in third place. The film has been pulling inf solid reviews, with early Oscar buzz already surfacing for Spielberg. You can probably expect the movie to get a bit of a boost once the awards talk picks up serious momentum.

Sandwiched in between both of those movies is Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which has been dethrone from its top position last week, but before adding another $21.5 million to its total. All three the top movies has benefited from great review buzz and word of mouth, but it would appear that Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak is not so lucky. Despite the gothic horror story garnering almost universal critical acclaim and lofty praise from just about everybody that’s seen it, the film has tanked on its opening.

Pulling in just $12.8 million domestically, with numbers steadily dropping off between Friday night and Sunday, it looked like Del Toro was once again going to have to rely on international audiences to keep his movie afloat. Except that it only a slightly less meagre $13.8 million, which makes the film’s relatively low $58 million production budget suddenly seem like a huge mountain to climb. Especially since it seems that it won’t be around on the charts for long.

And speaking of international audiences, the other big box office news of the weekend was Marvel’s Ant-Man finally opening in China. The film may may have taken months to reach the Asian box office superpower, but it would seem it was worth the wait as the film pulled in a whopping $43.2, the second biggest opening in China for Marvel behind Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s gigantic $156 million five-day bow. This brings Ant-Man‘s worldwide total haul to an impressive $458 million.

The other only noteworthy entry on the charts is the faith-based sport drama Woodland, which opened to a respectable $4.1 million. Here’s what is happening on the rest of the charts.

  • Goosebumps – $23.5
  • The Martian – $21.5 million
  • Bridge of Spies – $15.3 million
  • Crimson Peak – $12.8 million
  • Hotel Transylvania – $12.5 million
  • Pan – $5.8 million
  • The Intern – $5.4 million
  • Sicario – $4.5 million
  • Woodlawn – $4.1 million
  • Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $2.7 million

The biggest title exiting the charts this week is The Walk, which never really found an audience despite good reviews. It is currently only sitting on $26.5 million worldwide off a $35 million budget, which is not looking good. The other high-profile exit is Everest, but it has at least managed to pull in $166 million worldwide off a $55 million budget. Seems people will much rather cry about people dying on a crazy high peak, than a man who actually survives walking around up top.

  1. Has Black Mass not launched in the US yet? Woulda thought that’d make an instant impact on the charts.

It did last week, but it was on the US top 10 for like one day or something. Currently sitting at 12th. It has made decent money all over though, and has already pulled in $70 million worldwide.

Ok, cool. Thought I saw it last week, but then thought “No way it’s gone already”… It’s getting decent reviews (although not entirely shining reviews – alot of them are similar to yours… Great Johnny Depp performance, meh for everything else). Hoping to go see it this week – looking forward to it.
