NBC studios are setting up to take a gamble on the popularity of the 1999 hit Cruel Intentions and according to Variety have already picked up a script for a new TV series adaptation, that will act as a sorta- sequel to the movie.

The original movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair garnered a big profit at the box office and turned the group of young actors into global stars. Playing off of this popularity will surely bring the studio some success with nostalgia driving audiences to see what NBC will be doing with the project.

Here’s what we know about NBC’s modernized take on the story so far.

The present-day “Cruel Intentions” reboot will center around the 16-year-old son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Phillippe in the film) and Annette Hargrove (played by Witherspoon), named Bash Casey. Upon finding his late father’s journal, Bash learns of the family legacy he didn’t know existed. In search of answers, he trades his small-town Kansas upbringing for a scholarship to the prestigious Brighton Preparatory Academy in San Francisco and soon finds himself in a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

Now there was never any mention of Annette being pregnant with Sebastian’s child in the original but it is an entirely plausible idea and plays perfectly into this new version of the story.

Roger Kumble (no, not the character from The Fugitive), who wrote and directed the original movie is lined up to direct the pilot episode and is also credited with fellow scribes Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross for writing the pilot.

So far there have been no names mentioned to star in the show and there is also no release date available as yet. What I do know is that regardless of how good this is, my wife will most definitely be hogging the TV when it airs.

Still love this movie. And what a soundtrack – one of the best out there! A TV series could be interesting and that does sound like a promising plot idea… Not sure it can be pulled off, though (sounds a little too Dallas-meets-90210 for my liking).

Yeah it definitely stood out at the time and the cast really played off each other well. You cant help but get all nostalgic when you think about this movie. I think the series will work and there are so many series that have religious followers just for keeping the content scandalous (Gossip Girl, Devious Maids, Mistresses) so they could potentially tap into that market.
