David Goyer says Syfy’s KRYPTON will be set 200 years before MAN OF STEEL

One of the best parts from Man Of Steel for me was the opening 15 minutes or so that revolved around Superman’s home planet, Krypton. It was the first time that there was this much detailed focus on the planet, showing us how life was for the Kryptonians, and giving us a detailed look at the technologies and creatures that come from this distant world.

Acclaimed screenwriter/producer David Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Da Vinci’s Demons) will be expanding on this part of the Superman mythology with Syfy’s upcoming TV show, Krypton.

Speaking to the guys from ComicBook.com, Goyer revealed some details on the project and how it will tie into Man Of Steel as well, suggesting that the series will make use of certain unused elements from the 2013 blockbuster. Goyer had the following to say about the project:

“It takes place 200 years before Man of Steel. We’re treating Krypton like it’s a historical piece. We look to previous cultures on Earth to model what that would be like.”

Now although we got to see more of Krypton in Man Of Steel, the main focus was still centered around the destruction of the planet before Jor-El sends Kal-El to Earth to become the hero we have come to know him as. This still leaves plenty of story telling and subject matter to be explored and used for what could be a fantastic series. Goyer elaborates a bit on this:

“We scratched the surface in the film and, for me, that was the allure. I was always fascinated, as a kid, with the books about Krypton and they’ve only shaded in a tiny bit, so we’ll learn about the politics of the world. We’ll learn about the culture, the art, all the different guilds.”

Now some of you out there, like myself might be slightly concerned about budget issues and how this might reflect on the quality of the final product on a TV show as this. If we are told that this story ties in with Man Of Steel and that there will be unused elements from the film being used then that transition should be seamless and carry the same visual experience. Right? Well Goyer has addressed this concern as well:

“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. Should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

Now there are already hoards of negativity flowing through the comment section all across the inter web, but I will be ignoring this for now and saving my opinions for the pilot episode. What I can say for now though is that this show could do wonders for the DC Universe both on the small and big screen, and if done properly could set the stage for an endless supply of material to bring back into future Superman movies.

Are you as keen as I am to see this come together or do you think this project should be left alone?
