BBC’s Sherlock has quite the rabid fan base (or in Nick’s case – Rabbid) with fans clamouring for more at every opportunity, and it’s hard to argue with them as it’s become one of the definitive pieces of media for lovers of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. What makes it particularly difficult for showrunner Steven Moffat is that its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, are rather busy conquering Hollywood.

But, as we showed you earlier in the month,  Sherlock will be getting a one-off special episode over the upcoming holiday period – and finally we have a title and air date: Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will air BBC One (in the UK) and PBS (in the US) on 1 January 2016; proving that old acquaintances should not be forgot.

In case you’ve missed the news you might be wondering just why Watson has a silly mustache and why both are dressed in a rather old-fashioned manner – it’s because the special is jumping back in time to the Victorian era, where Holmes and Watson will investigate a supernatural mystery. According to Moffat (via Slashfilm) that’s been done for a very simple reason:

“The main difference I would say, the only temperature change moving it from Victorian and Modern is ghost stories work better in the Victorian setting.” [Arthur Conan Doyle] stories that are scary chillers we haven’t done much. Victorian era gives us a chance to do a creepy one, a scary one.”

And if you were wondering, given Moffat’s involvement in Dr Who, whether or not timey-wimey twaddle has something to do with the switch from the modern era to the Victorian, Moffat has a simple answer:

“Just because we can, really. We said, ‘Could we maybe do one scene or a dream sequence?’ Then we said why don’t we just do it? We never bothered explaining why he’s in modern day London. Why explain why we’re in Victorian [London]?”

Well there you have it then. We’ve also got a couple of new images to share:

Positively Victorian!

Just fiddling about

Here’s the trailer again – but this time with the title and release date added:

BBC SA has been very good in the past in airing both Sherlock and Doctor Who specials almost the same time as the UK. It’s usually only a day or so afterwards at the most.
