It is the week before Star Wars and all the smaller films are rushing to release. Remember: always arrive before the big star, not after. At least then you have a small chance of being noticed. As a consequence there are four new top 10 debuts this week…
The top of the local chart remains unchanged for a third week in a row. Spectre and the latest Hunger Games continue to hold onto their 1st and 2nd spots. Alas, not the same can be said for The Peanuts Movie, which dropped one place to 4th. In its place arrived Little Prince, an animated feature based on a popular French children’s novel.
At firth is the debut of Love The Coopers, a typical dysfunctional family Christmas yarn about too many of the same bloods spending time together over the holidays. As you would imagine, dysfunction and hilarity will follow.
Creed shifted down two spots from 4th last week, but still did better than the debut of The Gift. Critics have been enjoying this thriller, but in typical fashion more adult-orientated films don’t do well on the SA charts.
Still, if you want a flop, look no further than Victor Frankenstein. The action fantasy no doubt hoped for some better chart action, but arrived at a dismal 8th. It will not be here next week.
Finally, the charts end with Goosebumps at 9th – I really though it would last longer, but this 4-spot drop shows audiences have finally grown tired of the film. At 10th is Bus 657, an utterly forgettable thriller that also crashed four spots since its arrival last week.

Four arrivals means four departures, so we bid farewell to the popular Hotel Transylvania 2, underdog animation Blinky Bill, religious drama War Room and local drama ‘n Man Soos My Pa.
Spectre meanwhile is a money machine, now with overall local earnings of R26.5 million.
