Len Wiseman Die Hard

We reported earlier this week that the next Die Hard movie, Die Hard: Tear Year One will be featuring a little more of Bruce Willis, while still introducing a younger version of Bruce Willis in the mix as well. Today, the director, Len Wiseman has revealed further story details for the film:

After doing the fourth one, there were so many conversations that Bruce [Willis] and I were having about what he put into the character for Die Hard 1. That character comes in with so much baggage, emotionally, and experience. He’s already divorced, he’s bitter, his Captain hates him and doesn’t want him back. So, what created that guy?”

We’ve never seen the actual love story. We know its demise, but we’ve never seen what it was like when he met Holly, or when he was a beat cop in ‘78 in New York when there was no chance of him making detective. It’s always been something I’ve been thinking about, and now we’re doing it. And it ties in.

None of this is different from what we already know about the movie. Its an attempt to tell a backstory that nobody actually wants to know as the first movie is fine as it is and we prefer seeing John McClane as a normal guy than some action hero with another story. However, Len Wiseman has previously mentioned that he is looking to make the movie a sort of prequel/sequel, which he also elaborated further on:

The reason I say prequel/sequel is because I wasn’t going to do it without Bruce. I’m also not going to do it with Bruce being a cameo bookend gimmick. It’s really working into the plot, with the ‘70s having ramifications on present-day Bruce. It inter-cuts in a very fun, imaginative way with present-day John McClane.

The film itself will take place on New Years’ Eve 1979, so trying to gear things towards that would be fun, if we could come out around the same time, but these movies take their own paths.

So… There is still nothing that is convincing me that this will work. Hopefully it’s the older Bruce still doing all the bad guy whipping, while the younger guy deals with all the mushy nonsense and “emotional baggage”. Currently, there is still no actor that has been found to play the younger Bruce, but let’s hope they don’t rely on some poor special effects to make a person look like him and instead just get someone a little closer to his actual likeness.

I really hope they are going to be able to pull off something magical with this, but my intuition is that this once-great franchise is now burning itself into the ground… But, John McClane has never been one for taking the easy route out of a situation, I guess.

I think young Bruce should be played by Jai Courtney, because no one really care about this anyway.

I’m struggling to get excited about this. ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ aka Die Hard 5 was downright awful while Len Wiseman’s 4th entry was not.
Please guys, if you do this, do it right, I beg you.
