Corey Hawkins’ career just keeps blowing up. From playing one American cultural icon who isn’t afraid to hurt some people to handle his business to another (too soon?), the Straight Outta Compton star – in which he played a young Dr. Dre – has been tapped as the main lead of the recently announced 24: Legacy.

As was reported this new revival of the critically acclaimed multi-award winning “real time” drama will no longer be following Kiefer Sutherland’s iconic and legendary CTU agent Jack Bauer, but will instead be focusing on a brand new young cast. A cast that will be led by Hawkins who comes off his critically praised performance in Oscar-nominated biopic Straight Outta Compton, as well as a recurring role as Heath on The Walking Dead and a recent casting in Kong: Skull Island.

He will need to make some time that suddenly busy schedule though to shoot the 24: Legacy pilot ordered by FOX, which will see him as Eric Carter,  “a strong and smart former Army Ranger who finds himself pulled back into action as his past comes looking for him. He eventually turns to CTU for help in saving his life and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.”

It’s been reported that Carter will have some of the similar badass, take no prisoners tendencies of Jack Bauer, though the latter and his supporting cast will not be around for this latest installment of the show – the first time that’s happened since 24 began back in 2001. It is believed that Kiefer Sutherland will be sticking around as exec producer though, alongside original creators Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz.

Sutherland recently had this to say about the new show:

“I have said from the beginning that the real star of 24 is the idea, and I mean that wholeheartedly. I have every faith they’ll do something cool and clever.”

Despite his almost baby-faced looks, Hawkins is certainly a rising star in Hollywood, and has thus far shown himself capable of handling diverse genres, including showing off a tiny bit of his action chops on The Walking Dead. Whether he can step into the blood soaked shoes of Jack Bauer though, is a whole other question though. In the 13 years that he portrayed the character, Sutherland turned Bauer into one of the most popular – and complex – pop-culture heroes of the modern age. So, really: No pressure!

No timelines have been given by FOX as of yet as to when they will be producing the pilot, or even if they will put in a series order – though that does seem likely given the massive critical and commercial success of the last series. 24: Legacy is said to follow the same format of that series, 24: Live Another Day, which still saw each episode playing out as an hour in real-time, just like the original series, but instead had a time jump that allowed the show to cover a 24-hour period in just 12-episodes.
