Ever wondered what inside cats think of outside cats, what really happens in a dog park, how insects think about the light, or do androids dream of electronic sheep? Well then, except for the last one, HBO now has you covered. Animals is the upcoming animated adult comedy series from the minds of Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano, and produced by Jay and Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed, Togetherness).

Set in New York City, the show will bring to the fore an eclectic group of animals and insects with all too familiar human-like issues, or as the show’s official synopsis has it:

Whether it’s lovelorn rats, gender-questioning pigeons or aging bedbugs in the midst of a midlife crisis, the awkward small talk, moral ambiguity and existential woes of non-human urbanites prove startlingly similar to our own.

Check out the first trailer.

Well, that’s certainly unique. Animals having human-like thoughts and issues is something we’ve all considered at some point – just what is our pet thinking? Probably nothing, but it’s fun to imagine Nick is having a deep existential crisis because he saw a dog on the other side of the gate and his water bowl is empty. I also like the rather minimalist art style as it doesn’t distract from the dialogue, while allowing for rapid sight gags, as our poor mouse discovered.

Animals, which has already had a second season green lit, will begin airing on HBO on 5 February. It’s principal voice cast consists of Phil Matarese, Mike Luciano and Meghan O’Neill, and has a long star-studded list of contributors such as Mary Holland, Katie Aselton, Neil Casey, Jon Lovitz, Wanda Sykes, Aziz Ansari, Rob Corddry, Nick Kroll, Marc Maron and many, many more.

I’m hoping for more Rick and Morty. Also, check out F is for Family.
