New Luke Cage set pics hint at controversial plot details

Luke-Cage

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is arguably the best TV work the comic book studio has ever done. Also the most mature. Whereas Daredevil – as amazing as it was – went for maturity with a grim tone and bloody violence, Jessica Jones actually boasted some deep adult themes as it used it’s superhero story to tackle weighty issues like rape, sexuality and male power fantasies. And it looks like Marvel isn’t letting up with that adult-centric content one bit for its next Netflix series, Luke Cage.

Some new set pics for the upcoming series has popped up online, and while some of them are just cool to look at – like titular star Mike Colter putting the rest of us to shame when it comes to wearing a suit and still looking like a badass – there are a few that hint at possibly very controversial plot details. These could be considered POTENTIAL SPOILERS, so if you want to know nothing about the upcoming series then I suggest you turn back now!

I mean it! Go do your taxes or something!

BEAT IT!

Righto. All the spoiler-phobes gone? Good then lets get to those pics, courtesy of Gettys Images (via Screenrant).

As you can see in some of the pics, it appears that at some point Luke Cage is going to have a standoff with armed police. What potentially makes this scene so controversial is the fact that Cage is decked out in a grey hoodie. The real-life shooting of the unarmed Trayvon Martin in 2012 by George Zimmerman made headlines around the world, and sparked off numerous protests edged on by several police shootings of unarmed persons of colour in the US – which unfortunately was followed by even more shootings. The grey hoodie worn by Trayvon Martin on the pic that circulated on news after his death became an impromptu symbol of the movement. It’s such a widely recognized piece of symbolism, that there’s just no way that Marvel aren’t doing this deliberately.

The comic book character of Luke Cage with his criminal past (he was a convicted gang member who was experimented on in prison) is certainly no stranger to run-ins with the law. Cage has also always been a bit of an African-American icon in the comic book world, not to mention a street-level hero of the people, so if there was any character in Marvel’s catalogue who could and/or should tackle such a delicate topic it would be him.

Based on how incredibly well handled and thought provoking Jessica Jones‘ themes were, I am quite excited to see just what direction Marvel heads in here. Done properly this could lead to some powerful storytelling, but there is also the risk of it going in the opposite direction if its not handled with the respect it deserves.

What do you guys think? Do you want your superheroes tackling such current and topical socio-political issues, or would you prefer them to rather just stick to punching killer robots and crazy Nazis?

  1. Looking forward to it. But the controversy? Part of the controversy thing for me is that ALL unjustified police shootings are bad, but ONLY the white-black gets reported on while white-white or black-white doesn’t even get mentioned. ALL police shootings are controversial!

In America your chance of being involved in a police shooting if you are black is leagues higher than if you were white…

They are all bad but there is another problem that is only affecting the black population… facts don’t lie

“In America your chance of being involved” – Given that they are a minority, whites are 2.92 per million, black is 7.18 per million, which proves that point. But that also translates to 578 white deaths (101 unarmed 17.45%) vs 302 black deaths (75 unarmed 24.8%). However black deaths always make international news while white deaths are relegated to the back pages.

“there is another problem that is only affecting the black population” – what other problem that only affects them and what facts?

PS: There was an incident that was only reported as “back page news” in the US 2015 (black-white, unarmed, no suspicious activities whatsoever) a few days before the incident that sparked the 2015 “black lives matter” riots (unarmed, but just committed an armed robbery a bit earlier). But nobody was up in arms about that.

        #AllLivesMatter (except in the media)

PS: The US is already at 81 for the year!

I hope so – JJ (the cool one) tackled some serious issues, that’s what made it so interesting to me – hope he does the same.

I’m curious to see who the big bad will be. Kingpin & Purple Man were both freaking awesome in their roles.

Yeah, those baddies were awesome! I liked DD a bit more than JJ, but both were very good and well executed. Looking forward to more from these guys.

Imo Jessica Jones is boring as fuck, 4 episodes in and yawning like a mofo. Does it get better? Daredevil is much better for me
