Steven Soderbergh to return to filmmaking with Channing Tatum in LOGAN LUCKY

Warner Bros. Premiere of 'Magic Mike'

I always doubted Steven Soderbergh’s self-imposed retirement from the film industry to the TV world, as his passion for Hollywood films has always been apparent and it was only a matter of time before he decided to get back into pursuing this passion. Yes, he has been busy directing TV mini-series (like HBO’s Behind the Candelabra) and producing The Knick, but there is a certain allure of directing Hollywood pictures that is not easy to escape from.

I do think the break was needed though, as Soderbergh is known for his prolific film making where he can get through films in a relatively quick pace and I’m sure that can be incredibly tiring on a person. The TV industry generally moves at a slower pace, but also can have less pressure than some of these Hollywood films. Though, often a director has less freedom in the TV space, as networks are less likely to work with the obscure, which Soderbergh is not afraid to try out in his films as well.

And now Variety has reported that Steven will be coming out of retirement and back into the director’s chair, for an upcoming film titled Logan Lucky. So what is the premise of this move that was able to convince him to return to Hollywood? Well, not much is actually known about the movie yet, other than that it has been described as a heist thriller. No screenwriter or other details have emerged yet either.

What we do know is that Channing Tatum has signed for the lead on the role in the movie. Soderbergh and Tatum have worked together on several films including Haywire, Magic Mike and Side Effects, the last film from Soderbergh before his move to the TV world. It is believed that Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Man of Steel) will be joining Tatum for Lucky Logan as well.

Sources tell Variety that most of the major studios including Warner Bros., Sony and Fox are all lining up to acquire the hot package, and that a deal should be in place by the end of the week. We will keep an eye out for any further news on this as more details emerge on what this film may be about and as the cast grows.

Soderbergh is not completely moving away from his TV commitments however, as he prepares to move forward with a third season of The Knick as well as his HBO pilot Mosaic starring Sharon Stone. Tatum can be seen next in the Coen brothers’ film Hail Caesar! and is set to start production on X-Men spinoff Gambit sometime later this year. So expect this movie to still be quite far away from release as these two work through their busy schedules. Though I wouldn’t be surprised that once they start shooting, Soderbergh will get this wrapped up pretty quickly.
