Star Wars: The Force Awakens may no longer be perched at the very top of the box office charts, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not still a… force to be reckoned with. While this past Superbowl weekend saw it only able to muster up a fourth place worthy $6.89 million domestically, that was still enough to grant it the honour of becoming the first film in US history to ever gross more than $900 million domestically. While that vaunted $1 billion domestic total would be an incredible achievement, I don’t see it happening though unless Disney pulls a Titanic and gives the movie a re-release later in the year.

Not that The Force Awakens needs more money, as that bump helps it to cross the $2 billion mark globally, becoming only the third film to reach that milestone behind the James Cameron directed duo consisting of the aforementioned Titanic ($2.19 billion) and current all-time box office king Avatar ($2.78 billion). Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic’s crown seems safe for now, though Titanic could very well be giving up that second spot.

There was of course more happening on the chart than just Star Wars breaking yet another record, as Kung Fu Panda wasn’t releasing the no.1 spot from last weekend from its kung fu grip. Po and the gang has always been a family-friendly hit, and I’m sure that that broad appeal helped to power it to a strong $21 million second weekend take as parents took kids to the cinema while they got their American football on.

Not that there wasn’t something for the grownups as well, as the Coen Bros’ latest, Hail, Caesar, had a second place debut with $11.4 million. Critics seem to be loving it a lot more than your general audience though, and this is lowest opening ever for the Oscar-winning filmmakers, but whether this doesn’t bode too well for it’s longevity, or it’s just a result from the Superbowl drawing away potential viewers is still up in the air.

And speaking of movies that critics and audiences disagree on, the latest bit of Nicholas Sparks adapted effluvia, The Choice, managed to draw in enough cinemagoers who clearly had never seen the trailer or they would have known how the entire movie turned out and so rather stayed home. The Choice ended up with a $6.085 million debut, which was enough to squeeze into fifth place ahead of fellow box office newcomer Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The revisionist zombie action adventure scored $5.2 million in its opening weekend, which is waaaaay below its studio estimates. It looks like this one may need international audience to breath some life into its undead box office at this moment.

I don’t know why you said that I meant $900 million. Clearly my article said $900 million this entire time.
