MONSTERS INC and BIG HERO 6 screenwriter Daniel Gerson passes away

Its always sad when a talented individual passes away and earlier this morning we received news that Daniel Gerson, screenwriter behind much loved animation classics Monsters, Inc. and Big Hero 6 has sadly passed away of brain cancer, aged 49.

Gerson’s family said in a statement that he died at his Los Angeles home on Saturday after battling brain cancer. Gerson was a frequent contributor for Pixar Animation, co-writing both 2001’s Monsters, Inc. and its 2013 sequel, Monsters University.

Along with Robert L Baird and Jordan Roberts, Gerson co-wrote Disney’s Oscar-winning Big Hero 6, an animated superhero tale. The pair worked on an array of other animated films in various capacities, including Chicken Little(2005), Cars (2006), Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015).

Gerson, who grew up on the Upper West Side in New York City before attending Cornell University and later NYU film school, started his career as a writer on such TV series as the NBC sitcom Something So Right and Fox Family’s The New Addams Family before successfully transitioning to the world of movies and especially animation which remained a lifelong passion for him.

Gerson is survived by his wife, Beau Stacom, and two children.
