The Power Rangers reboot is officially a go. Or rather I should say, Go Go Power Rangers! Because, that’s how the theme song goes and as soon as I saw this news come up I had the theme song stuck in my head, so now you will too!
After the trickle of news revealing the writers, director and casting of the main villain alongside the five leads, Lionsgate have announced that the movie has started filming, and revealed what it’s actually going to be about. Here’s the official synopsis:
Saban’s POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Wow, it’s like I’m watching KTV after school all over again. I don’t know if you were expecting anything ground-breaking, but that sounds like quintessential Power Rangers to me. I guess this is more about introducing the franchise to a younger generation than it is cashing in on extended nostalgia. Besides, I don’t think anyone is that nostalgic for Power Rangers.
Now filming in Vancouver, Power Rangers is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
