The Cloverfield monster may have wrecked havoc on earth, but it seems its not big enough to stop Zootopia from dominating at the box office again this weekend. Zootopia dropped only 33.4% from its record breaking debut last week to claim a very healthy $50 million over the weekend and actually made gains on its international gross to reach over $400 million already in the past two weeks. It has so far been an overwhelming success for Disney Animation studios and a good sign showing that good animated movies can still clean up at the box office.

As mentioned above, it was also the debut of the JJ Abrams produced 10 Cloverfield Lane which had us all guessing from those trailers what is really going on. It’s come in second on $25.2 million, which is a strong performance considering the marketing for the movie relied more on viral campaigns than advertising to the mass market and its come off strong reviews as well during the week, so is likely to only continue the success as word of mouth spreads. I’m increasingly looking forward to this movie and can’t wait for its SA release to finally see if the film does those amazing trailers and marketing justice.

Elsewhere on the charts, we have seen several big films continue to fall, especially for Gerard Butler whose London Has Fall and Gods of Egypt both drop further in the chart. London Has Fallen is still doing reasonably well against studio expectations considering its budget, but Gods of Egypt is just reaffirming its dud status as the biggest bomb of the year so far. The other big films from last week, the Deadpool behemoth remained steady in 3rd place and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot only dropping 1 spot to 5th.

There are a trio of other new entries that made it into the top 10 this week in The Perfect Match, religious drama The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby, the latter confirming that the public seems to be growing tired of Sacha Baron Cohen’s off-colour humour.

Let’s see what the rest of the chart looks like.

  • 1. Zootopia –  $50 million (LW: 1st)
  • 2. 10 Cloverfield Lane – $24.2 million (NE)
  • 3. Deadpool – $10.8 million (LW: 3rd)
  • 4. London Has Fallen – $10.6 million (LW: 2nd)
  • 5. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – $4.6 million (LW: 4th)
  • 6. The Perfect Match– $4.15 million (NE)
  • 7. The Young Messiah – $3.4 million (NE)
  • 8. The Brothers Grimsby – $3.15 million (NE)
  • 9. Gods of Egypt – $2.5 million (LW: 5th)
  • 10. Risen – $2.25 million (LW: 6th)

Falling out of the top 10 we see The Revenant fall out of the top 10 again after its 1 week Oscar revival and it is joined by Kung Fu Panda 3, which has still made a cool $136 million in its Box Office run, though has been far less successful than its predecessors. Eddie the Eagle and The Witch are the other 2 that fell out of the top 10, both without bothering the charts too much.

Outside of the top 10 there were as many as 8 new entries of mostly small, private films, with South African director Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky in particular standing out as it only opened in 5 theatres and yet still made its way to $110 000, which is a pretty impressive per theatre intake. It’s good to see that kind of return for smaller productions and especially for Hood.
