The first Kingsman was certainly a one of a kind spy movie that certainly did a lot of things right in telling a fresh story in a brutal, but fun way. It was different from everything we had seen before and was filled with so many scenes that were so brash and brave, I still can’t believe they actually made it work. While this first film arrived with barely any expectations at all and took everyone by surprise, this second film is certain to have some high expectations of people clamouring for more.  The issue with all sequels, such as this one, is how do you repeat something that was fresh and unique the first time and still keep some uniqueness in the sequel.

It’s something that director Matthew Vaughn is aware of, which is why he is trying to focus on the right areas to ensure this movie does its best to be memorable. In speaking to Empire Magazine he revealed not only a lot about his plans for the new film and what he aims to do to make it build on the first, but also revealed some concept art and importantly – the title for the new movie.

The concept art for Kingsman: The Golden Circle does seem to point at some potential plot points of what the film could be about. Based on the below pictures we see a destroyed Kingsman HQ, the Statesman HQ (which is the American version of the spy organisation), a really cool flying car and Poppyland, the secret lair of lead villain Poppy (played by Julianne Moore). From what we know about the movie so far, ti’s after that attack that Eggsy and Merlin head to the US, an organisation led by a “swaggering, sharpshooting cowboy” called Jack and Halle Berry’s Ginger.

It doesn’t say much, but Vaughn has got big plans for the characters in the film and in particular the villain to be played by Julianne Moore:

I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.

One scene of the original film which stuck out, was that awesome church sequence, which was certainly so crazy, it would be hard to ever top in any films. So does Vaughn have any plans on potentially trying to recreate it?

You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.

Personally, I’m glad he won’t redo that scene. It belongs in cinema history all on its own. That there are other epic scenes that he still has in mind are great and hopefully they will be just as special and memorable as that one. Some of the scenes that Vaughn mentioned the film will include are a skiing sequence, a barroom brawl, robot dogs, one-armed henchmen, and the heroes being attacked by what Vaughn calls, “a massive frankfurter.”

Sounds incredible and filled with all the crazy things you would expect for the sequel. 2016’s best comic book movie may not be the one you were expecting.
