Midweek Movie Mouth-off: what’s next for the DC Extended Universe?

Now that the frenzy of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has died down somewhat, we can start asking the question, so what’s next for DC? And I don’t mean what are they going to be releasing next, we know their release schedule is nailed down until 2019, but rather more philosophically, where do we go from here?

For a movie as divisive as BvS, it feels like it should be a watershed moment. Putting aside that critics have slated it, and indeed putting aside the fact that despite the critics slating it, the opening weekend numbers were incredible, this is where Warner Brothers should be deciding where they want to go with their DC Extended Universe. We are seeing it in its relative infancy, and there is still time to change. Are they going to stay the course and do what they want to do with their gritty universe, at the risk of alienating more fans? Or do they soften and listen to the valid arguments of their critics and more vocal fan-base, at the risk of looking like they copped out and tried to copy Marvel?

I suppose the next thing we will be able to judge them on is Suicide Squad, which despite all appearances I have high hope for. DC have always had the best villians, and a movie solely to showcase them might go a long way to bolstering their on-screen universe. But if it disappoints, more people may change their minds and drop out of the DC fandom, as has already happened with BvS.

So where do you think Warner Brothers should go from here?

They could go with a Young Justice film if they want to make less gritty. The Young justice TV show was pretty good. And they could still also include the mainstream heroes like the Batman and Superman as cameo appearances as advisory roles to the teenage heroes.

I just had a thought. In BvS, Bats and Alfred had more than one conversation about good men turning bad. In the end, Bats reckons he failed Supes. Could it be that he was partly the “good” man that turned “bad” i.e. non-killer turned Punisher? Could that have been due to the happenings surrounding that Robin suit – that Joker pushed him too far? Perhaps we will see that turning point in the Solo movie, and perhaps BvS is now a turning point back to the “no kill” Batman we are used to. They need to allow their characters to grow more and not rush things…I hope the Solo movies coming gives us that!

That is certainly a valid theory actually. It’s been hinted at strongly that the solo Batman movie will be a prequel exploring the whole death of Robin story.
