Jai Courtney addresses rumours about SUICIDE SQUAD reshoots

We’ve just had the release of Batman v Superman: This name is too long and also the upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League films to look forward to next year – but the real DC Comic film I am personally looking forward to is Suicide Squad, coming  out later this year.

What I like about the Suicide Squad movie is the focus not on the heroes, but the villains and as we all know, a good villain is what really makes any superhero movie and having a movie filled with potential villains makes my mouth water with opportunity. And also with the idea of villains playing the good guys in this film as well, it puts the audience in the morally ambiguous situation of supporting the bad guys when you know deep down you really shouldn’t – it makes for a refreshing change from what we have seen so far from most films of the genre. And from what we know of the film so far, we should be in for a wild ride with this film, but it could also most certainly be a very dark movie, which may make audiences feel less drawn towards it. And while, I personally like the darker tone that DC Comics were trying to go for, it has been one of the biggest complaints of the recent BvS movie and it seems Warner Bros is keen to lighten the mood of their upcoming films as a response to this feedback.

And that is also one of the things that stood out about the Suicide Squad trailers, was that it packed a lot of humour and fun into it and the response from the internet in general was overwhelmingly positive in support of this movie. It is believed though that the film was still made with a darker tone in mind and Warner Bros has since been dropping millions into re-shoot in what is believed to be an effort to lighten the tone of the film and ensure that the only jokes in the film are not just the ones from the trailer (ans I wouldn’t be surprised if the ultra fun Deadpool breaking loads of records probably also had an effect on it).

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight however, Jai Courtney denied that the re-shoot were an attempt to lighten the mood and simply just aimed at adding additional action to the film:

I think there’s plenty of [humor] in it. I wouldn’t say we’re going back to make it funnier, there’s some additional action stuff that we’ve been doing, which is pretty dope. Really we’re just kind of adding in that sense.

Now, I tend to think that he is telling the truth here and that the re-shoot will be adding action scenes into the movie, but it does seem a little suspicious at how the reshoots were only ordered after the release of BvS and the positive response of the trailers. I wouldn’t be surprised that there is a deliberate studio intent to make this film a fun one and ensure that the villains are not just seeing as dark, but fun at the same time.

We will probably never know for sure – personally I hope that the film was fun in the first place as attempts to re-shoot humour and fun moments into a dark script are likely going to cause a lot of inconsistencies with the tone of the film, but I guess we will have to wait for the finished product to know for sure.

What do you make of these Suicide Squad re-shoots – does it signal a change of direction for the film or do you believe Jai here? Also, what tone would you like to see in the movie – is fun the way to go or should they be sticking with a darker tone to differentiate it from the other Superhero movies we are used to seeing?
