Rumour: WOLVERINE 3 could potentially feature…

wolverine

There’s a lot we don’t know about Wolverine 3 yet as the plot is heavily under wraps – we don’t even know the actual title for starters! We do know it’s going to be R-rated due to graphic violence, something people who’re familiar with the comics know isn’t out of place at all when it comes to the clawed Canadian.

We also know that Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) will be taking on the Wolverine in his role as a “relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise” – which doesn’t really tell us anything – and that the movie will be taking place in that vague time period known as… the future.

There have been rumours that Mark Millar’s “Old Man Logan” story line could form the basis of Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the character he’s been playing for over 15 years now – and which Kervyn handily summarised for as us as the story arc that…

…saw an older Wolverine, vowed to non-violence, being forced to go all berserk again on a cross-country mission in an alternate future where the villains have defeated almost all heroes and conquered America.

We know that Wolverine is unlikely to be recast (in the near future anyway) once Jackman retires from the role with producer Simon Kinberg quoted as saying:

So either we would try to entice Hugh to come back and eat more chicken and work out for a few months, or we would have to figure out a creative way to move forward. Honestly, I can’t imagine anybody else playing the part.

So just where am I going with all this?

Well, according to a rumour based of casting call (via Superhero Hype and Cinema Blend) for “Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian looking females varying from 4’-4’11” as well as younger stand-ins of the same ethnicity there’s speculation that this person could potentially be making their big screen debut…

X23-character

YESSSSSS! X-23! That sound you don’t hear – it’s my beating heart being still. I’ve never wanted a superhero rumour to be more true. If there’s been one X-Men character I’ve wanted to see brought to life on the big screen, it’s X-23.

For those of you unfamiliar with the character, Superhero Hype gave a brief breakdown:

X-23 made her comic book debut in 2004, after originally being conceived and debuting in the animated series X-Men: Evolution. Her origins stem from a group attempting to replicate the Weapon X program, which gave Wolverine his Adamantium skeleton, but who decided to go in a different direction and attempt to clone Wolverine outright. The first 22 attempts at cloning Logan failed, which is where the young mutant received her code name after being the first success.

Like Wolverine, X-23 (later given the name Laura Kinney) has superhuman strength, reflexes, agility, and a healing factor. The primary difference in the pair is X-23 has only two claws on her hands, with an extra that can be popped out of each of her feet. Throughout her publication history, X-23 has been a loner, a member of the X-Men and X-Force, and recently took on the mantle of Wolverine following the hero’s death.

Even if I didn’t like her character more than I like what I can do with Nick’s kidneys, she’s an excellent solution to what is a real problem for the X-Men movie universe – replacing the fan-favourite yet aging Wolverine.

She’s established and well-regarded on the comic book front after featuring for over a decade, and carries on Wolverine’s legacy. She’d fit very well into an X-Force movie, as opposed to the X-Men movies that have a lighter overall tone, given that there’s talk it would be R-rated as well and she’s prone to… outbursts of violence.

What do you think?

I wonder if Jackman would appreciate all the time and effort he puts into his physical training being brought down to “So either we would try to entice Hugh to come back and eat more chicken and work out for a few months”. Also, I HAVE NO KIDNEYS! 0_O
