Emilia Clarke says "No" to more TERMINATOR sequels

Whether you like Terminator: Genisys or not – I fell somewhere in the middle – there’s no denying that the movie’s $440 million global box office take is nothing to sneeze at. With a newly tinkered with timeline resetting events, Genisys was supposed to kick start a whole new trilogy of movies. The ending of the film even had Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular old T-800 robot finally getting a hefty tech upgrade that would make for some intriguing future adventures. That’s not to mention the mystery still left wide open as to who sent him back in time this time around (this happens a lot!) to change the life a young Sarah Connor, now played by Emilia Clarke.

The problem though is that while Genisys was a pretty solid global commercial hit (thanks, China!), it performed pretty poorly in the US itself. And then of course there were all those very harsh reviews. All of this has meant that the franchise’s future has been in limbo – depending on who you speak to, it’s either completely dead in the water or still poised for a couple of follow-up movies.

Well it seems that supporters of the latter position just got tossed a massive curve ball as they’ve seemingly lost their new Sarah Connor. Chatting to ComingSoon.net, Clarke was pretty definitive on whether or not she would reprise her role as the badass human freedom fighter.

“No. Can I say that? It’s okay. No. Uh-uh. But I have some very different roles coming up.”

Well, crap. As the franchise has been telling us since Day One, if you take out Sarah Connor, you take out the future. I just don’t think production studio Skydance were expecting this to actually also happen in real life.

There is a glimmer of hope though, as Skydance Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg revealed to TheWrap late last year that the franchise was not “on hold, so much as readjusting”.

“Do we intend to have a next step of Terminator? Yes, we do…. I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as re-adjusting. At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises… All the steps have to be taken in unison… [So] we are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year.”

“We’re ultimately happy with overall worldwide numbers. Do I wish we would have done better domestically? Absolutely. Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago — I’m not saying it’s not important, it is — but we have to play to a worldwide market. In terms of ‘Terminator,’ the worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly.”

“[We plan to use] data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn’t work for them, so that the next we take with the franchise is the right one.”

And maybe that next take is a Sarah Connor-less Terminator story? Honestly, who even knows at this point? At least we do know that Arnie is still keen though. After all, he’ll always be back.

I’m fine with that. Everyone except Arnold in Genisys was uninteresting.

It’s the Jai Courtney effect. He makes everything bland by association.

Was the last one good? Not in my opinion. But it was not as bad as it was made out to be – it was totally watchable and had its moment. I just wish they could recapture the magic of the first two! And…
