While Stephen King’s works have regularly been adapted to the big screen over the years, this seems like a productive period for the prolific author – Nick It is being rebooted, The Mist is heading to TV, and we’re finally on the road to The Dark Tower. In between all this an adaption of one of King’s newer works – 2006’s ‘Cell’ – is nearly here, as this trailer will show you.

Directed by Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2, The Door in the Floor), John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson head up the tale of a man searching for his son amidst an outbreak of cellphone-induced zombie-ism… which makes it sound like a documentary.

The plot synopsis is as follows:

Cell follows the quest of a desperate New England father to locate his son following the broadcast of a mysterious signal that transforms people into rampaging maniacs.

One of the things that really struck me when I read ‘Cell’ a few years back was King’s incredibly vivid description of the sheer chaos that enveloped the world at the moment the signal was broadcast – and this trailer definitely shows us glimpses of that with planes falling out of the skies and people losing their minds as the signal infects them.

Overall though I’m not so sure about this movie because King adaptations are notoriously hit-or-miss, sadly often the latter, and the trailer doesn’t really show anything we haven’t seen before when it comes to “zombie” movies. What do you think?

Cell is due for release in the US on 8 July, no local date as yet. It stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman and Stacy Keach.

  1. Never read the book, but the premise reminds me of Garth Ennis’ Crossed…though less violent.

Edit. Also…I’m just going to say it. I enjoyed Dean Koontz’s books more and would like to see more adaptions of his work.

It’s a pretty standard King story really. You haven’t missed anything by not reading it.

If I remember right Koontz’s Odd Thomas character was getting some kind of adaption, but I’m lazy & don’t feel like googling. 😀
