Thanks to the midweek public holiday, I’m sure a lot of you have already managed to see Captain America: Civil War. Here’s everything else that’s new on cinema that you’re going to ignore to watch Captain America again.

  • Captain America: Civil War

After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps-one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Squee! It’s here, it’s finally here! And they’ve nailed it! I’m really starting to think that Marvel can do no wrong, every time you think they’ve reached their pinnacle, they somehow raise their own bar higher. Captain America: Civil War has got the best action sequences Marvel have pulled off so far, new characters that fit in perfectly alongside returning stalwarts, laugh out loud jokes and gut-wrenching drama, a story that shines and visual effects that shine even brighter. The only dark spot is the so-so main villain, but honestly you’re not here for that. You’re here for Cap versus Iron Man, and they’ve definitely delivered a Civil War, to the tune of 4.5/5 stars from Kervyn.

  • Ratchet and Clank

Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.

Unfortunately  the Ratchet and Clank movie has been embargoed right up until this morning, so all I can find are reviews of the game – which is, by all accounts, super fun – so I guess we just wing it based on the trailer alone. And, it looks like the movie is going to be… super fun. It might be instantly forgettable, but it’s inoffensively  light and cute with a high profile cast (including Paul Giamatti, John Goodman and Sylvester Stallone), good jokes, and seems like a great way to introduce the next generation to the beloved franchise. Or, if you want to be really cynical and bitter, a shameless cash-grab of a tie-in to force parents to buy expensive console games. I prefer not to be so jaded though and, let’s face it, you were all probably going to buy Ratchet and Clank anyway… but thanks to the movie, you’ll just have to share more console time with the kids!

  • Queen of the Desert

A true story of the life of British explorer and adventurer, Gertrude Bell, QUEEN OF THE DESERT chronicles her journeys of love and loss in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

Queen of the Desert is visually stunning and, well, that’s about it. Otherwise it’s a tired trudge through what tried to be an epic, sweeping romance and failed horribly. Instead of covering what the real Gertrude Bell did as a cultural pioneer and feminist icon, they’ve reduced her to a pining, pouting princess waiting for a man. The movie comes across as thoroughly devoid of passion, drive, and anything that made the real Gertrude Bell great, ultimately floundering to a dismal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Free State

A random act of kindness leads to an Afrikaans girl falling in love with an Indian man in 1970’s South Africa.

Politically charged, with race, religion and apartheid rule all swirling around a forbidden-love story, the stakes are high in Free State, as shown in the trailer fuelled by passion and drama. Story aside, I’m glad to see another local production of such high quality and with such a talented cast.

  • Jane Got a Gun

Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) has built a life on the rugged western plains with her husband Bill “Ham” Hammond (Noah Emmerich) and young daughter. When Ham stumbles home riddled with bullets after a run-in with the relentless John Bishop (Ewan McGregor) and his gang, she knows they will not stop until her family is dead. In desperation, Jane turns to Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton), a man from her past, for help. Haunted by old memories, Jane’s past meets the present in a heart-stopping battle for survival.

Jane Got a Gun is a movie that went through such a troubled production, with actors and directors dropping in and out at a dizzy pace, it’s a wonder it’s finally made it to cinema. And, unfortunately, the final product shows just how much trouble they went through. It’s sparse, perfunctory and not terribly engaging, as if everyone just did their best to finish what they started and get it over with. Considering what this movie went through, 43% on Rotten Tomatoes probably isn’t all that bad, and that speaks volumes.
