Neill Blomkamp's ALIEN movie is "worth the wait"; older Newt concept art revealed

Thanks to Ridley Scott and his indecisiveness about exactly what he wants to do with the Prometheus sequel (that move had like 3 title changes and just as many release date swaps!), we just have to be good little boys and girls and wait for Neill “District 9” Blomkamp to finally give us his Alien movie and thus explain what all that cool concept art was about.

But according to Sigourney Weaver , who is set to somehow reprise her role as original franchise heroine Ripley in Blomkamp’s film, it will all be worth the wait. Weaver explains (via AggressiveComix):

“Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2. He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn’t do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

That’s all good and well, but doesn’t give us any further clues as to what this movie will actually be about. You will recall that Blomkamp’s original concept art showed off older versions of Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Corporal Hicks, even though the latter died at the start of Alien 3 and the former died at the end (though thanks to cloning in the next movie, she got better). This led many to believe that Blomkamp would be rewriting continuity and ignoring the events of the more poorly received Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. However, Blomkamp then clarified that this is not the case, that everything that happened is still considered canon.

Which makes this new piece of concept art for the movie that the South African born filmmaker recently released even more puzzling as it shows off a now all grown-up Newt.

The last time we saw Newt, she was a little girl in Aliens (played by 10-year old Carrie Henn) who needed to be rescued by Ripley, but just like Hicks she also died in the prologue of Alien 3. Biehn, who has already been confirmed to be returning, spoke about the possibility of Newt’s revival, saying that it will be a highly coveted role as the character is actually being setup to be the new franchise lead.

“They’re planning on bringing me and Newt back, and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old. I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it’s really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt.”

So what gives? Is Blomkamp pulling a JJ Abrams and giving us some kinds of alternate timeline storyline here? That certainly would not fit with the much more realistic and less fantastical Alien universe, but since when has Hollywood shied away from terrible ideas for sequels?

Speaking of which, lets just hope that its not clones again, because not even Joss Whedon could make that idea work. It’s going to be clones isn’t it?

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant is currently shooting in Australia for an October 6, 2017 release. I would hazard a guess that Blomkamp’s still untitled Alien film would probably go into production next year for possibly a 2018 release.
