The search for a new Lara Croft has finally concluded. And much like the famous videogame heroines’ adventures, the treasure was a bit unexpected. While most folks had loved the news that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley was being considered to play a young Lara Croft in the upcoming feature film reboot, THR is now reporting that the role has instead gone to rapidly rising actress Alicia Vikander.

I have to admit, I was one of the people on the Ridley train, mainly because as Rey in Star Wars she had already shown off so many of the exact qualities that would make a great Lara Croft. However, there’s no denying the appeal of Vikander either. The 28-year old Swedish born actress first garnered attention in Anna Kanerina, before unfortunately also finding herself in the disappointment that was The Seventh Son. But that didn’t stop her from suddenly popping up on just about every major casting list in Hollywood. And all that attention paid off when she had her true breakout role as a morally dubious AI construct in the brilliant Ex Machina. She turned that momentum into a spotlight stealing role in the otherwise just okay Man From UNCLE and finally blew everyone away in The Danish Girl, the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination, a BAFTA nomination, but most importantly, also an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress.

To just say she’s talented and the current Hollywood “it” girl, would be a gross understatement, so this most definitely a pretty high profile casting for the Tomb Raider gig. As one of the most successful video game franchises in history though, Tomb Raider definitely deserves it, especially given the fact that the upcoming movie is going to be based on the absolutely brilliant, critically acclaimed 2013 video game reboot of the same name. Vikander’s serious dramatic chops are really going to come into play there, as it’s a much more emotional and grueling origin story instead of the cheesy adventures that Angelina Jolie went on she first played Lara Croft on the big screen in the moderately received Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life in 2001 and 2003 respectively.

This new reboot is being co-produced by MGM and Warner Bros, and will be directed by a fellow Scandinavian breakout star in the Norwegian born Roar Uthaug, who turned lots of heads this year with his big budget disaster movie The Wave. Evan Daughtery (Snow White and the Hunstman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (upcoming MASK and ROM movies) have tapped pen the screenplay.

So what do you guys think of Alicia Vikander for the role? Did you prefer somebody else for the role? And if so, then who? (I would be willing to bet that Daisy Ridley’s schedule was the main thing that took her out of contention here). Sound off below!
