Snowden

They’re watching you, right now, as you read this… Paranoia? Nah, just another day in 2016. And people say our parents lived in the dark ages, more like the ‘I can walk around my flat butt naked without worrying my Xbox One is watching me’ era! But I digress!

Of course one of the biggest and most embarrassing things in recent times to hit America was the leaking of Top Secret NSA files by ex-CIA analyst Edward Snowden (since then an orange, wig-wearing bigot has stepped up to claim the Most Embarrassing Thing About America title). Thousands of files which proved that the American spy agency was not only tracking and listening to potential terrorists, but almost EVERYONE on the planet took the world by storm. It is of course on-going, with Snowden avoiding extradition by seeking asylum in whatever country will take him. I’m not sure this movie is going to help his case.

Snowden features one of my favourite young actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who bares an uncanny resemblance to the on-the-run whistle-blower. Legendary Director Oliver Stone helms the prickly subject and from the newly released trailer, it looks like Snowden is hyped up into a super, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, freedom fighter. Have a watch and see what you think:

It looks like a lot of fun. Not sure how much of it is actually true but it definitely has the ‘Stone’ flare the director is known for. The script is actually drawn from Luke Harding’s ‘The Snowden Files’ and Anatoly Kucherena’s ‘Time of the Octopus’ and was co-written by the director and scribe Kieran Fitzgerald.

It’s the sort of movie I am intrigued by and it has some decent actors like Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans and Joely Richardson. It also has Nicholas Cage in. Expect lots of tin foil hats out on 16 September.

  1. That is definitely a “based on a true story” movie. Which is kinda sad, given how important the subject is.
