Despite what my 15-year old self may have thought at the time, Space Jam was not a good movie. I love the Looney Toons like you wouldn’t believe, and even I have to admit that the greatest thing that movie ever did was give us the musical genius of “Basketball Jones” and to act as an internet time capsule for time immemorial.

But clearly somebody out there is still loving the idea of Bugs, Daffy and the crew playing some basketball on the big screen as THR reports that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3-6, Star Trek Beyond) has now signed on to direct a sequel. The original 1996 live-action/animated hybrid film – which earned $230.4 million worldwide – starred Michael Jordan alongside the Looney Toons crew as they played some b-ball against an alien menace, but this new version will instead see NBA star LeBron James filling in instead.

James actually dropped a huge hint last year already that he was involved already in some kind of Space Jam sequel, but there had been no further development at the time from Warner Bros. Now its all official as Lin will be also co-writing the script with Andrew Dodge (Bad Words) and Alfredo Botello, with sources also saying that Lin “will be thoroughly involved in the creative development of the project.”

I have to admit that Lin’s involvement – and Dodge’s, since I loved Bad Words – actually has me a little excited for this. He almost single-handedly turned the Fast & Furious franchise into the massive action movie spectacle blockbuster series it’s become. I’m not too sure about where he’s taking Star Trek Beyond though, but I’ll reserve judgement on that until I see it.

The big unknown in this case may be LeBron James, as I have no idea if off the court he can show enough character/charisma to actually carry the movie. I mean, yes, it’s not as if Michael Jordan set the thespian bar very high to begin with, but I wouldn’t the 6ft8in James to stoop even lower. That would just be uncomfortable for both him and us.

So what do you guys think about a Space Jam sequel?
