When it comes to Power Rangers costumes, we should have known we would be in for something radically different after Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa costume for the upcoming reboot veered so strongly from the classic character look. That being said, I really didn’t expect to see suits that looked like Iron Man Crayola Edition, but colourful armour is what we got. VERY colourful armour!

The classic spandex and eerie faced helmet getup was lame even back when we were too young to know any better, so I’m actually happy this contemporary take is getting some badass duds, which EW explain are actually “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies”. Production designer Andrew Menzies elaborated:

“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume. Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

Director Dean Israelite went on to talk about how this may be a big change from the historical look, but change is something inherent to the franchise.

“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

What do you think about the new suits? Cool or too garish? And is anybody else still a little creeped out by the static mouth parts?

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger. It is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.

  1. I like it! I think it’s a good update even if it does look like Stark Enterprises sponsors the Power Rangers now

Gotta say, the look is also growing on me (no pun intended). Would like to know if these are going to be practical pieces of armour though, or whether they’re gonna go the Iron Man CGI route.
