Russell-Crowe

Russell Crowe is fantastic actor, but he has developed a bit of a reputation for snapping and losing his cool to monstrous results. Well, monstrous if you’re a hotel concierge in his line of fire and there’s a telephone at hand. And it looks like Universal may want him to channel all that flip-switch rage into something constructive for them, as it’s being reported by Deadline that he’s in talks to join their upcoming reboot of The Mummy.

Tom Cruise is already leading the upcoming action-adventure – which is the first entry in Universal’s new shared monster movie universe – as a special forces soldier character who will be going toe to toe with the titular mummy played by Kingsman‘s Sofia Boutella. Also starring is Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance. But according to the report, Crowe is set to play a “Jekyll-like role” opposite Cruise, which pretty much implies that he will be a new version of classic split personality character Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde.

Reporters from both Variety and Heat Vision have also revealed on Twitter though that Tom Hardy was originally very close to signing on for the role before negotiations broke down and Universal then approached Javier Bardem, Eddie Redmayne, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. They were also unsuccessful with all of them before eventually chatting to Crowe. Based on how high profile all these actors are, it’s certainly not a big leap to think that this role is being setup to spinoff to a movie on its own. Maybe the still untitled 2019 monster movie that was just added to Universal’s calendar earlier this week?

Jekyll/Hyde movie will certainly fit right into Universal’s already announced slate of The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Van Helsing and Bride of Frankenstein. And with Johnny Depp signed on to lead The Invisible Man and reports that Angelina Jolie had been courted – unsuccessfully – to star as The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s clear that Universal is trying to fill these films with A-list talent.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts. It is currently shooting in the UK (check out the first set pics), and is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017.
