Mandrake

Warner Bros had already expressed their plans to bring the comic strip character Mandrake the Magician to life way back in 2012, but now we finally have some further information on the progress made so far in pre-production with news that the film has a likely star and a director attached. It is none other than Sacha Baron Cohen, who is reportedly slated to play the titular magician in the film adaptation and they have also signed on another Cohen to direct (no relation between the two however) with Etan Cohen (Get Hard) the man given the responsibility of turning this comic strip onto a successful film adaptation.

This is not the first rumour that has gone around about a lead for the film with Jonathan Rhys Meyers previously also having been reported as a potential for the lead at some point. There is no official word confirming this news, but Etan Cohen has gone to twitter to seemingly confirm the reports of him directing, so it seems this news can be seen as reliable.

The film adaptation of the material is apparently planned as a contemporary adventure, with the most recent drafts of the script written by David and Janet Peoples (12 Monkeys) and scribe Tom Wheeler (Puss In Boots). I have no doubt they will be trying to build as much humour into the script as possible, given the talent at their disposal. Charles Roven (BvS: Dawn of Justice) and Andy Horowtiz will be producing through Atlas Entertainment. And now that we have a director in place – we can expect things to move quicker in the production of the film.

For those unfamiliar with the comic strip, it was created in 1934 by Lee Falk (who would go on to create The Phantom) and followed the character Mandrake, a specialist in hypnosis and illusion who used his magical abilities to fight crime. He was partnered by Lothar, an African Prince and one of the strongest men in the world and together the two made a decidedly well balanced and fun crime solving pair.

There is no release date yet for the film at present.
