Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: the moment you realised you wasted your money

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that entertainment is expensive, so trips to the cinema are starting to become an exercise in caution. With the price of the tickets and, of course, the snacks, plus the mental exhaustion of braving the crowds, going to watch a movie has become quite costly. So obviously, we do what research we can into the movies we’re going to spend our hard-earned time and money on, because after all, you want the experience to be worth it. Sometimes though, all our careful planning can fall through.

There comes a moment that we’ve all experienced, maybe it happened a movie that you had high hopes for, maybe you didn’t have any expectations at all. Maybe you researched it and read reviews, or maybe you went in blind. But, you’re sitting in the theatre, watching everything unfold on screen and you think to yourself “damn it, I have wasted my money”. Maybe it’s bad enough that you walk out the cinema then and there, but more often than not you suffer through and sit through the rest of the film stewing in your growing resentment.

I can pinpoint that moment exactly with Jupiter Ascending, in the scene where (spoiler alert but, let’s be honest, no one cares about that stupid movie) they get to Sean Bean’s house and the bees magically tell our protagonist that she’s the queen of the universe because “bees can sense royalty” or some other similar bull. At that moment, I was done. Completely done. The awful thing was I think that was still in the first third of the movie, but yes I still soldiered on and watched the rest, despite thinking I could have spent that money on something so much more worthwhile.

What moment of which film made you realise that you had completely wasted your trip to the cinema?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That put me off for a while.

About 20 minutes in to Avatar 3D, which I only went to watch because I’d watched the 2D previously & wanted to see what all the 3D fuss was about, I remembered Avatar is actually kinda dull, and was further confirmed when the only really cool use of 3D was the briefing scene in the beginning.

Living in a town with no movie theater of it’s own (closest is 100km away). I only very seldom watch a movie on the big screen, and then only ones I’m absolutely certain I want to be spending money on, but I did have one “I wasted money” moment in the theater. The movie was Pacific Rim, a great film, but the cinema I was at was only showing it in 3D, and I very quickly realized I do not see the 3D effects, so I paid 3D price to watch a slightly blurry 2D movie

Oh no! What a horrible way to find out you can’t watch 3D

Was still a brilliantly fun movie, so I wasn’t too bummed. I now just make sure the movie I go to see is available in 2D everytime
