Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: what clichéd dialogue irritates you the most?

A lot of the time, movie dialogue doesn’t really sound like real life. Yes I know there are quite a few circumstances that only happen movies, meaning that some specific lines you’re not likely to hear anywhere outside of the movie theatre. Unless you work in a nuclear power plant and the reactors go critical fairly often, I guess? Most often though, there are some ridiculous, over-the-top sentences that no one ever really says in real life, but somehow the clichés persist on the big screen.

Any variant of “I didn’t sign up for this” is one of my all-time pet peeves. Even more so if it’s said by someone like a police officer. Chances are, with the situation you’re in, yes you very much signed up for this! Especially if you’re a policeman in a superhero movie, you should already be very aware that weird stuff is going to go down.

Another irksome line is the clumsy excuse for exposition used by the dumb protagonist when the scientist is explaining something. Our hero inevitably cuts through the ‘techno-babble’ and pipes up with “ENGLISH, PLEASE!” That doesn’t impress anyone, it only makes the protagonist look like an a-hole, and a stupid one at that.

Lastly, if you say to someone “wait, let me explain”, there’s a reasonable chance that they will actually wait and let you explain – as opposed to immediately running away and causing the movie’s third act complication. Seriously, how bewildered would you be if that really happened?

Between the “it’s not what it looks like”s and the “there’s no time to explain!”s, there’s plenty of clichéd dialogue that you’ll probably never hear spoken out loud in real life. Which one irritates you the most? Bonus points, if you do happen to use any clichéd dialogue in real life, what lines do you use and when do you bust them out?

I use “I’m off to the bloody pub” quite often. But not really a clichéd line

“Who are you?” As seen in (insert super Hero movie (except Iron Man)).

As for the one I use the most in real life “I’m getting too old for this stuff”) – Lethal Weapon

The “when last did you sleep?” conversations. Die in a fire.

“Hey you look tired, when last did you sleep?”
“Oh, I got an hour 3 days ago.” *sip coffee*
