I’m not familiar with the source material of this next film and didn’t know too much about its development, but after seeing the new trailer that has launched for it, I’m certainly wondering where have I been all this time. It seems despite this age of social media and global information, I can still live under a rock at times.
You can view the trailer for The 9th Life of Louis Drax below:
The story, based on a book by Liz Jensen and directed by Horns director Alexandra Aja focuses on a 9-year-old boy who falls off a cliff and ends up in a coma… only to miraculously recover. It sounds like the kind of medical drama that will give the tear-ducts a thorough cleansing, but there is so much more to it. The boy hasn’t just cheated death this time, he has done it many times before – and he was pushed off the cliff, he didn’t just fall.
So what we land up with is not some medical drama, but a cool psychological sci-fi thriller where the neurologist (Jamie Dornan) decides to investigate the boy’s circumstances further and dig deeper into what his parents (Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon) have in fact been up to. The trailer doesn’t give too much away and certainly makes you wonder what on earth is going on, with almost supernatural elements seemingly taking place.
The film looks like it is quite smart and will likely keep you guessing. It’s an exciting premise and hopefully turns out to be a great film.
The screenplay for the film was written by Max Minghella and the film also stars Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey and Oliver Platt. It looks like it will be getting a limited release in the US, so not sure what that means for us yet – chances are we may only see it when it hits the VOD and DVD market, unless it impresses and does well there.
