Remember Trolls? Remember the 90’s? Of course you do, because according to the internet, only 90’s kids are allowed to remember anything about the 90’s. Nostalgia is a strong thing, so pervasive that listicles with super click-baitey titles like this are practically a meme of their own. But if we’re running with the idea that nostalgia sells, it really begs the question: why did they choose to make a movie about Troll Dolls?

Ok, full disclosure, I used to play with them back in primary school, I’m sure a lot of you did as well. But it’s not like they were that big of a deal. To me, they were just another 90’s fad that thankfully fell by the wayside, along with beanie babies and crimping your hair in a wicked side ponytail. Memorable, sure, but not exactly important anymore. Also kinda cringe-worthy. And you’d think that after so many failed attempts at re-branding in the early 2000’s Trolls would (hopefully) stay a distant memory.

Nevertheless, DreamWorks announced back in 2013 that they’d acquired the intellectual property for the Trolls franchise and, well, here we are. The initial teaser trailer didn’t exactly give us much to go on, but now that the first official trailer is out, we can see what all the fuss is about.

This holiday season, enter a colorful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comedicly pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach.

Well, it looks like we’re not going on nostalgia marketing after all. DreamWorks seem like they’re introducing Trolls to the next generation by starting again from the ground up. Hopefully that works, because that trailer sure as heck wasn’t geared towards anyone in my generation. The bright colours, pop soundtrack and poop jokes (LOL) are definitely aimed at kids.

Featuring an admittedly impressive cast of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, and Gwen Stefani, Trolls will be swinging into cinemas November 4th.
