No, we at TheMovies haven’t made a documentary about our daily struggles with Nick – The Intervention is a comedy-drama, and the directorial and writing debut of actress Clea DuVall (Veep, Carnivale), about a group of friends staging an intervention. Which I realise now should’ve been obvious from the title.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

A weekend getaway for four couples takes a sharp turn when one of the couples discovers the entire trip was orchestrated to host an intervention on their marriage.

And here’s why my intervention comes in – that cheesy guitar music? It’s no good for you and it has to go because it nearly put me off watching the trailer barely 10 seconds into it. Which would be bad because, that aside, this doesn’t look too bad – I did have a chuckle or two while watching.

Many comedies of this sort try too hard with over-the-top characters in ridiculous situations whereas The Intervention looks like it could give comedy movies one of their own – by having ordinary people with regular problems that we can identify with, and find funny. What do you think?

The Intervention is due for release in the US on 26 August. Written and directed by Clea DuVall, it stars Cobie Smulders, Jason Ritter, Melanie Lynskey (who won the Special Jury Prize for her role in the movie at the Sundance Film Festival), Natasha Lyonne, Ben Schwartz (who is strong with it), Vincent Piazza, Alia Shawkat and DuVall herself.
