After six years of teasing us with meteorological proclamations, Winter finally came to Game of Thrones in the hugely popular show’s absolutely epic season 6 finale two weeks ago. And as the snowy winds blew in, HBO’s award-winning fantasy drama delivered one of the best hours of television this year, leaving fans like myself chomping at the bit for what’s coming next. Seems we’re going to have to chomp a little longer.

Whereas previous seasons of Game of Thrones have usually premiered on HBO in early April, the show’s upcoming seventh season will be arriving later and it’s all to do with that pesky winter, as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained during a recent UFC Unfiltered podcast.

“No … we don’t have an airdate yet, but this year it’ll probably be a bit later, ’cause we’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘winter is here,’ and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”

The massive show is predominantly shot in Ireland, which usually has its coldest months of the year in January and February. If the producers are looking to make full use of that chilly climate then it’s totally understandable that they wouldn’t make their April deadline, as the show requires a huge amount of post-production work.

But just because it’s completely logical doesn’t mean we can’t be upset about it, because damn it, after that insane season ender, I need some more Game of Thrones in my life right now!
