Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: Hey Hollywood, how about remaking some bad movies for a change?

Hollywood loves to remake movies. We’ve debated this several times, but it’s in the forefront of everyone’s minds right now thanks to the imminent release of the Ghostbuster reboot. Thankfully the reviews for that have been largely positive (in case you missed it, we did a review round-up here). Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for The Legend of Tarzan, which hasn’t been getting such kind feedback.

The thing with these remakes is that they keep going back to the same type of movie. Hollywood only ever focuses on rebooting largely successful movies, both classics and cult classics alike, as long as it was super popular and loved by the masses it’s almost guaranteed to be getting a remake any time now.

But what if, for a change, Hollywood used their powers for good? I know, sounds crazy right? But bear with me. Why not take older movies that were terrible and give them a second lease on life? There are plenty of “good idea, bad execution” movies that could be revisited, or even movies that were just ahead of their time. Now that technology has caught up to human imagination, there are loads of movies that could be remade without cringe-worthy Claymation effects and awful, obvious green-screen. Even more recent movies that flopped thanks to bad timing, lack of marketing, the wrong lead actors or directors, can be given the once-over. Everyone deserves a second chance.

So instead of hearing about how Hollywood has turned yet another one of our beloved childhood favourites into a soulless cash-grab so that we can bemoan our loss of faith in movies and humanity in general, let’s give them some new ideas. There are unplumbed depths of bad movies to redo, so if they’re going to insist on remaking everything, they’ll have plenty of bad movies to practice on. Which one would you go for, and why?

Yes! What a fantastic idea! What I wouldn’t give for a good Mario movie
