Wouldn’t it be nice to just call on someone to sort out all the issues in your life whenever it was needed? It’s certainly something I wished for, not just as a child, but an adult too. Only my fantasy revolves around a very rich friend who is willing to sort me out financially, buy me expensive gadgets all the time and miraculously pay off my bond for me – like all good friends should, right?

And although my imaginary friend has yet to materialize in the real word, it doesn’t mean the idea won’t make a good story.  It’s actually this idea – with a monstrous difference – that forms the premise for J.A. Bayona’s new film A Monster Calls. It’s a story based on a fantasy novel by Patrick Ness and revolves around a boy (Lewis MacDougall) who is going through a difficult time in life. His mom (Felicity Jones) is incredibly sick, he is being repeatedly bullied at school and his grandmother (Sigourney Weaver) is not exactly sympathetic towards his troubles. To escape these real world horrors, he invents a fantasy world led by a monster (Liam Neeson) that helps him cope.

This trailer surprised me quite a lot. It initially looked like it would be something similar to Spielberg’s recent The BFG, yet it seems to offer so much more. The film appears to operate on a deeper level than what you would expect for a children’s story. The story has a lot of strong undertones and emotion that can already be seen in the trailer, especially the bond between the child and his self-created monster. What also stands out for me is how visually stunning and different the film looks. It certainly makes me excited to see what Bayona does with his films in the future, especially with him being planned to direct the Jurassic World sequel.

If you had an imaginary friend that could help you to deal with the difficulties of life, what would it look like?
